IDH and cocoa
World demand for cocoa is growing annually by 2 to 3%. However, production in West-Africa (70% of world supply) has shown a declining trend of 2% per annum in recent years. To ensure future supply, the sector is working on improving yields and profitability for farmers. The sector wants to increase current yields of approximately 400 kg/ha to over 1000 kg/ha. The most important steps are: training farmers in modern farming techniques, using new plant material, increased use of fertilizer and dialogue with authorities to improve enabling factors.
The Netherlands has taken the lead in this challenge, given that over 25% of the world’s cocoa processing industry is located in the Netherlands. The Dutch cocoa sector has an annual turnover of 2.5 billion Euros and generates over 10,000 full time jobs. In the next 6 years, businesses will invest an estimated 325 million € into sustainability.
The IDH Cocoa Program brings together parties that account for approximately 30% of the chocolate market. The current program is directed at training and certifying farmers in efficient, sustainable agricultural techniques, and strengthening of farmer organizations to achieve economies of scale and better market access. IDH wants to play a central role in the scaling up and acceleration of focused initiatives to make sustainability in the cocoa sector as a “license to operate”.
